Education

If you’re beginning your journey, completing your high school education is an excellent starting point. However, transitioning into an apprenticeship might be a natural next step for those who have spent years tinkering with vehicles in their own garage. Alternatively, you can explore a 2-year trade school program to gain a solid foundation in the mechanical and electrical systems of heavy-duty trucks.

Apprenticeship / Internship

At Wichita Kenworth, an apprentice is an individual who enters the team at an entry-level wage, eager to learn the intricacies of the trade while providing essential support to the team. This serves as an ideal starting point, especially if you need more prior experience. On the other hand, an intern is typically enrolled in an accredited trade school program and dedicates a winter or summer break to working in the shop, gaining hands-on experience, and supporting the team.

Opportunities

The trucking industry brims with opportunities, extending well beyond the journey from apprentice to master technician, particularly when considering the emphasis on original equipment manufacturer (OEM) training to reach the master technician level. By focusing on specialized OEM training, you can unlock many prospects, including roles such as foreman, service advisor, warranty administrator, assistant department manager, department manager, or outside sales (trucks or parts). The path you choose is as boundless as your ambition.
